Key Insights
- •Irrigation dependence varies dramatically—from near 0% in some rainfed/agroforestry-dominant countries to near 100% in parts of the Gulf.
- •Several of the world’s major grain/rice producers (e.g., India, China, Pakistan) show high irrigated shares, underscoring irrigation’s role in staple production.
- •Very high irrigation shares can signal vulnerability to water stress and energy costs even as they support high agricultural productivity.

About This Statistic
This statistic measures the share of a country’s agricultural land area that is equipped for irrigation—land provided with infrastructure to supply water to crops (e.g., canals, pumps, sprinklers, drip systems). It’s a useful lens on food security and climate risk: highly irrigated systems can buffer drought, but they also depend on water availability, energy, and infrastructure.
The indicator comes from FAO’s AQUASTAT/FAOSTAT work on water and agriculture. Countries with very high values tend to be in arid regions (where rainfed farming is limited) or have long-established irrigation networks in river basins. Low values often reflect predominantly rainfed agriculture, limited irrigation investment, or abundant rainfall.
