Key Insights
- •Suicide mortality varies widely across countries even after age-standardization.
- •Cross-country comparisons can be distorted where death certification systems are weak or where suicide is heavily stigmatized.
- •Because the metric is age-standardized, differences are less driven by population age structure and more by underlying risk and reporting practices.

About This Statistic
This statistic measures the age-standardized suicide mortality rate—how many deaths from suicide occur each year per 100,000 people, adjusted to a standard age structure so countries with older or younger populations can be compared fairly.
The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes these rates as part of its Global Health Estimates, drawing on national civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) where available, plus cause-of-death modelling to improve comparability where under-reporting or misclassification is likely. Suicide is widely undercounted in many settings, so cross-country differences can reflect both real variation and differences in death certification quality.
