Key Findings
  • Road traffic mortality risk varies widely across countries, reflecting differences in infrastructure, enforcement, and post-crash care.
  • Several high-income countries cluster at very low rates (roughly 2–6 per 100,000), while many low- and middle-income countries experience much higher burdens.
  • Motorcyclist- and pedestrian-heavy travel mixes are often associated with higher fatality rates without strong safety protections.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the estimated number of people who die from road traffic injuries each year per 100,000 population, adjusted for differences in countries’ age structures (age-standardized). It is one of the clearest cross-country indicators of everyday safety risk, reflecting enforcement, vehicle standards, infrastructure design, emergency response, and travel patterns.

The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes modeled country estimates to improve comparability where death registration systems are incomplete or inconsistent. Rates can change over time with policy shifts (speed management, drink-driving enforcement, helmet/seatbelt laws), changes in vehicle fleets, and the mix of pedestrians, motorcyclists, and car occupants on roads.
