Key Findings
  • Tobacco use remains very high in parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (many countries near or above ~30%).
  • Several low-income countries show comparatively low modeled prevalence (often single digits), though under-reporting and sparse surveys can be issues.
  • Some countries with strong tobacco-control policies cluster around the low teens, illustrating policy impact alongside cultural factors.
  • Large populations (e.g., India, China, Indonesia) heavily influence the global burden even when prevalence differs by product type.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the age-standardized prevalence of “current tobacco use” among adults aged 15 and older (both sexes). “Current tobacco use” includes smoking and/or smokeless tobacco use at the time of survey, standardized to a common age structure so countries can be compared fairly even if their populations are older or younger.

The World Health Organization (WHO) compiles household survey and other nationally representative data, then models trends to produce comparable country estimates. This indicator is useful for tracking progress on tobacco control policies (taxes, advertising bans, smoke-free laws, cessation support) and for anticipating future burdens of cardiovascular disease, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases.
