Key Findings
  • Tobacco use remains high in many countries, with several above ~30% prevalence among adults (15+).
  • Age-standardization enables fairer comparison between younger and older population structures.
  • Both smoked and smokeless tobacco are included, which can raise prevalence in countries where smokeless use is common.
  • Cross-country variation is large, underscoring the impact of taxation, advertising bans, smoke-free laws, and cessation support.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the share of people aged 15 and older who are “current tobacco users” (smoked and/or smokeless), reported as an age-standardized prevalence rate for both sexes combined. Age-standardization makes countries more comparable by adjusting for differences in population age structures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) produces modeled prevalence estimates using nationally representative surveys (e.g., DHS, STEPS, GATS and other official health surveys) and applies harmonized definitions and statistical modeling to fill gaps across years and countries. The result is one of the most comprehensive, globally comparable datasets on tobacco use—covering the majority of countries worldwide.
