Key Findings
  • Account ownership is near-universal (≈98–100%) in many high-income economies (e.g., Nordic countries, Canada, New Zealand).
  • Several low-income or conflict-affected countries remain below ~25%, highlighting persistent gaps in basic financial access.
  • Mobile money helps lift inclusion in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g., Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda) relative to peers at similar income levels.
  • Large emerging economies show diverse outcomes: India is high (≈78%) while Pakistan remains much lower (≈21%) in 2021.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the percentage of adults ages 15 and older who report having an account at a bank or another financial institution, or personally using a mobile money service. It is one of the most widely used indicators of financial inclusion, capturing access to basic financial tools for saving, receiving payments, and managing money.

The data come from the World Bank’s Global Findex Database (2021), based on nationally representative surveys (Gallup World Poll) and harmonized definitions across countries. It is especially useful for comparing inclusion across regions and income groups, and for tracking progress toward broader development goals like poverty reduction and economic resilience.
